The Story Behind the Song: “Flying to the Moon”

This song was written on January 8, 1997.  According to a journal entry that day, “While perusing the Twisted Tunes homepage…I picked up my guitar and wrote a song.  It was almost that easy.  I’ll bet I had the song pretty much done in twenty minutes.”  As I recall, the particular song I was listening to when inspiration struck was “Vedder”, a parody of Pearl Jam’s “Daughter”.  I tried many times to record a suitable guitar solo before working out the finished product, which features a lot of double-stops.  The original version was recorded in 1997–the last song I recorded on my old Fostex 4-track recorder before it gave up the ghost–and appeared on my 1999 album Machine Dream. In 2011, it was recorded by Mother Zephyr as part of a demo and was part of the live repertoire of that band. I used this demo version on the 2024 re-release of Machine Dream.

Me – lead vocals, electric guitar; Joe Arrington – backing vocals, acoustic guitar; John Franjione – bass; Kevin Schama – drums
