The Story Behind the Album: Postcards From the Whirlwind

After Chameleon Red’s Skeleton Crew album was finished in 2013, that band continued on playing occasional gigs. I continued writing new songs, because that’s what I do, and I figured they’d end up on the next Chameleon Red album. Indeed, several of the songs I wrote during that time found their way into our set list. My personal life got very difficult, though, and it became harder to do anything but care for my ailing partner for a while. Eventually, around 2019, Chameleon Red went on indefinite hiatus, and I was left with a handful of unrecorded songs. I had not recorded a solo album since 2002, and wondered if I still had it in me. I began work on “Sing Open the Circle” and “Lost Together” in early 2020. Then Covid-19 hit. Finding myself isolated, I suddenly had a burst of creative energy. I wrote a new song, “Time to Wake,” recorded it almost immediately, and shot a video. I got such a good response that I made the goal to record a song and create a video once a month. Like a woman afire, I began recording existing songs, finishing old songs, and writing new ones, with videos to match, for the next year. As the pandemic became endemic, my creativity waned a bit, but I found myself with enough songs for my eighth solo album.

I put together the collage on the front cover digitally, and enjoyed overloading it with images and symbols reflecting the turbulent time in which the songs were recorded. The postcard on the back is an actual postcard I filled out and then photographed.
