I wrote “Soulshine” in March 2021, trying to find some mental equilibrium in the aftermath of the Capitol insurrection and the ongoing pandemic. The demo was more of a folky-sounding song, but for some reason I decided to record it in a Crosby, Still, and Nash meets the Bee Gees arrangement. My friends Rosemary and Ann were kind enough to lend their voices for harmony.
I’m not sure how I hit upon the glowing orb idea for the video, but it proved to be a memorable motif. I sent out a call to friends and received videos of lighting candles. The video shoot was fun, though trying to get the “passing on the light” from orb to orb proved to be a little more challenging than expected.
