Memory and records are scant, but I must have started writing the songs for Interim not long after Anti-Gravity was finished in 1991. I was still writing in my last semester of college in the spring of 1992. Whereas the first album saw me trying on different lyrical and musical tropes, this time around I began channeling my rage and depression into deeply personal songs. So personal that I didn’t let anyone hear it till quite a while after it was finished—it felt like letting someone read your diary.
As with Anti-Gravity, I borrowed equipment from friends, and all the songs were recorded using this equipment, so I must have had all the songs done beforehand. By this I infer that I recorded everything in late spring of 1992.
By the time I created a stark cover for the album, I was working at my first post-college job, meaning I let several months go by before letting friends hear it. In the meantime I had been playing in a band called Culture Shock, which is a whole other story (which is recounted on the main website).
I definitely feel like my song craft was improving, though the quality was far from consistent. The hair metal years were drawing to a close, grunge was ascendant, and I was listening to a lot more classic rock, all of which came out in my writing and playing.
