The Story Behind the Song: “No Words”

“No Words” was written very quickly in the first flush of new love. The object of my affection loved songs in minor keys so this one was written with that in mind. I built on a chord/melody fragment I had recorded a few months before, and finished it on December 6, 2022. I began recording it a month later. Maybe I knew subconsciously that I should capture before the other shoe dropped. It’s an odd love song, really. There’s an air of desperation and angst that hovers over the finished product, perhaps reflecting my complex feelings looking back on that love affair.

The video is probably a bit incongruous, given the music, but I though making it a little silent film would inject some humor and would be fun besides. I already had a flapper costume and some Art Deco furniture, so it was easy to pull together. I shot much of the film at a slow speed, miming to a slowed-down version of the audio, then sped it up in post-production.

This was the opening song for the Number 9 release show.
