The Story Behind the Song: “Sapiosexual”

I had the idea and title for “Sapiosexual” in the early 2010s, but it took a long time to germinate. I was kind of inspired by songs like “Brick House” and “She’s a Bad Mama Jama” that were very much focused on physical attraction. I thought it would be cool to write a song that, instead of focusing on a woman’s body, focused on being attracted to her mind. I had some phrases written down, like “Circle of Willis,” but it took a while to come up with some music I liked and then get lyrics together. I was pleased at the comedic-sexy tone, sort of Marvin Gaye meets Weird Al. The final “Voulez-vous penser avec moi” line was a takeoff on “Lady Marmalade,” of course. I finally finished the song on September 30, 2020. I don’t remember much about the recording of the song, though I got Kirk Roberts to play drums again and recruited my Plague Pod friends Rosemary and Ann for backing vocals.

I knew there was great potential for the video, so gathered the pod together for some brainstorming; out of that grew things like the two globes, caressing the Grand Tetons, and crawling on the periodic table. When it came time to shoot, Rosemary and Ann directed my performance; I needed some help on how to appear sexy rather than my normal awkwardness. The bulk of the video was shot in one day. It proved to be the most-watched video of any on the album.
