Written in December 2001. Maya is a Sanskrit word meaning roughly “illusion”. The perception that each of us is an island, that what we do has no impact on the larger world, and that we can completely know another person–these all are illusions, in my opinion. Interconnected disconnectedness is the gist of the song. I hear some Pink Floyd and Pearl Jam when I listen to it now.
The video for this one proved popular, maybe partly because of the cool visual effects I got using green screen not only behind me, but on the top I was wearing. Most of the background footage was taken on various travels, not only locally, but in places as far-flung as Yellowstone and the Scottish Highlands.
