Written on June 22, 2001, after a run-in with an ex. Writing the song was a bittersweet experience; it was probably the biggest downer I’d ever written as far as lyrics go, but it was truthful and I felt like the music supported the feeling well. I liked the stripped-down feel of the recording. This was one of the songs I partially re-recorded in 2009, to try to get a better guitar sound.
As it happens, the video was recorded on a cold, rainy day in 2023 just a week after a devastating break-up. I didn’t have to act to project the aura of utter desolation.
